Maybe a silly method to raise nitrates but...
I have 2 tanks full of Discus. I do frequent water changes on these tanks. One of the primary reasons is to keep nitrates down. Would it be smart to dump some of this nitrate-rich water into my planted tanks or am I missing something?

Probably best to use fresh water. Assuming your water has a fair amount of hardness it will provide the plants with more nutrients than just nitrate.
If the cost of the fertilizer is becoming an issue I suggest you try mixing your own fertilizer solutions from dry chemicals. It's ridiculously cheap compared to using Flourish for everything.
