Maybe a silly method to raise nitrates but...

Post by Larry Grenier »

I have 2 tanks full of Discus. I do frequent water changes on these tanks. One of the primary reasons is to keep nitrates down. Would it be smart to dump some of this nitrate-rich water into my planted tanks or am I missing something?

It would be ok to douse your houseplants, but you'd need to test the waters, so to speak, to see what effect the discus water is having on your planted tank water, eh?

Probably best to use fresh water. Assuming your water has a fair amount of hardness it will provide the plants with more nutrients than just nitrate.

If the cost of the fertilizer is becoming an issue I suggest you try mixing your own fertilizer solutions from dry chemicals. It's ridiculously cheap compared to using Flourish for everything.

Not a money issue just seemed like a good way to re-use water.

Thanks folks
