I don't know if it's still active, but there used to be a great educational website called "Take your bedroom off the grid" that gave a primer on solar power and how you can start with a small system to power one room and then scale up as utililty money is saved.
Any solar supply site should have a solar/PV primer and worksheets.
Another option is a vertical axis wind turbine like this

Yeah, the goldfish should go after it. It might take them a little while to figure out. Golden shiners, and, I think, flagfish, will eat it too.
Remember, the stuff is prolific, so it will take a while before you start to see a decline.
