possible cheap option for lighting

Darn. I have the coralife and they have the crappy reflectors. Coralife stuff really is junk. I'll never buy from them again... Anyone have experience switching out the reflectors in the coralife all-in-one cf units?

I have rolls of flashing that is used for contstruction. Would this material be suitable for reflection?

Some reflector is better than no reflector, but the range of possibles is quite broad. DIY hoods painted flat white are sort of the baseline, Spider reflectors (for NO tubes) and Miro (aka AHSupply, for compacts) are the top. In between the two, there is a huge range of DIY. If you go DIY, set one with flat white latex paint as a baseline and try duplicate variants for effectiveness.

You can use the camera as a light meter if it shows you the setting it will use, but the measure is fairly crude - take a reading with your baseline, trade that off for the test unit. The faster speed or smaller aperture is brighter.
