possible cheap option for lighting

Some reflector is better than no reflector, but the range of possibles is quite broad. DIY hoods painted flat white are sort of the baseline, Spider reflectors (for NO tubes) and Miro (aka AHSupply, for compacts) are the top. In between the two, there is a huge range of DIY. If you go DIY, set one with flat white latex paint as a baseline and try duplicate variants for effectiveness.
You can use the camera as a light meter if it shows you the setting it will use, but the measure is fairly crude - take a reading with your baseline, trade that off for the test unit. The faster speed or smaller aperture is brighter.
