I want to add sand to my tank for looks. I am having trouble finding plain sand. My main concern/question is will it affect the chemistry? The only thing I am able to find is the play sand at Home Depot or "sand" in the plant section at Home Depot. Will this be ok to put into my water?
Use pool filter sand .. not the junk from HD
You might also want to check out the 3M Color quartz, I hear that is pretty nice stuff. SC Murphy could chime in on that one more ..
Just a small note. If you want to use white sand, it does indeed make for a nice effect. However, you'll want to remember that just like white couches/carpets when you have dogs/kids, they require frequent cleaning, and often end up losing their bright white color after a few months time. Algae and detritus tend to make it hard to keep nice.
Of course, if you're determined, you can probably keep anything looking nice and proper. (Read, riccia carpets Amano style.)
Try swimming pool supply stores and look for pool filter sand. The granules are a little larger and it is inert. I got one called Mystic White that is about as white as it gets.
Do not get the sand from HD...I just spent the better half of two hours siphoning it out of my tank and putting in white gravel. I changed it because of how messy the sand is. It doesn't take much to have a desert storm. Plus sand is impossible to keep clean.
