PLANT ID METHODS

Hello:
I am sure someone out there has the "best" way to id their plants, particularily under water ids...

I have tried a sharpie, pencil, dymo labels, so far, nothing is holding up....

I grow orchids and for above ground or above water labels, it isn't a big thing.... one of the best ways is to write out your plant id on a label then spray the label with a clear laquer spray paint . once it drys, it is perpetual or let me say i haven't had one wear out that way

but....... i am not having as much luck with labeling for underwater plants....

I just keep Cavan around for things I can't remember. That said, I believe I've seen folks use a label maker on plant spikes before.

A lot of people just mark the outside of their tanks with sharpie.

Everyone should have a "CAVAN"

I have a label maker but....... after some time the label loses it's stick and the label falls off the spike.

I do mark the outsides of my tanks...... Looks like a freakin petstore wth all writing on the tanks.....

I have a bunch of things mounted on rocks, and until I learn everyones names, It would be nice to keep them all tagged...

I was hoping someone has a fullproof method, so I can keep track of things until I can remember ....

David, are you putting plants in a scape or putting them in a "farm" tank?

When I was a newbie and had a farm tank, I used to put my plants in a little pots with substrate and then put the names of the plants on labeled plant spikes. Then I would leave them submersed until I was ready to use them.

I take pictures of the plants I get and give the pictures the Latin names of the plants. That helps.

Viktor brings up a good point. This was a big reason I started my blog years ago, so I'd have pictures and record of what plants/fish I bought in a searchable format.

We have few planted tank enthusiasts here in Denver in Colorado Aquarium Society.
I have recommended them to create a database of the plants that are available with the members.
I ended up creating a website to demo this (this is a temporary website)

Thanks for all the input... I suppose i wasn't too clear.....
my queery was for an underwater id method, something that holds up under water
I Do write on my tanks, I do take photos, but when I am farming out several young items that are similar, instead of moving things around so that like plants are not next to each other, I just thought someone might have experience with some sort of marker that holds up decently
I do have a spread sheet with some of my more rare plants... but it would be nice to have a quick look method to id them.
I don't have issues with my emersed plants, just some of the species/variants that can look alike... ie..... bucephalandras.....
