Is there a reason for this?

A few Cryptocoryne wendtii are sending roots up, out of the substrate into the leaves.
Could the way they are planted or even what they are planted in, cause this to happen.
Has anyone known of Crypts doing this? Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Here you can see the roots coming up through the leaves. Anyone with a similar experience have any idea why this is happening?
I've been thinking of cutting them back.

Yeah crypts do this sometimes to get nutrients out of the water column. Give them a root tab and scold them to keep their roots to themselves.
