Recomendations for fans
I'm building a hood that will need a fan and I have 3 noisy fixtures that could use better fans of varying sizes. Can someone recommend a brand that is good and silent?
Had great luck with SilenX in both computers and in a modifified light fixture.
There are a couple of others... start looking at computer fans, they are rated for decibels nowadays, and know you get what you pay for - there are reasons some are premium priced.
I got fixed speed, be careful of variable speed as you don't have a CPU or temp gauge to tell them to speed up.
Another was IIRC Scythe? Few good premium fans. They stand out quickly when you compare CF put out + Db.
You'll find cheap ones that do neither well, cheap ones that are quiet with no output, and cheap ones that blow like crazy and sound like an airplane. Want output and quiet... the prices jump quickly.

I like the fans that Current USA put in the old Orbit fixtures, www.marineandreef.com has them. I think they are quiet and move a lot of air, if you let them build a lot of dirt they can get noisy but one of mine is still running 8 years later and the other I just replaced in April, they both came in the same fixture and they are $22.30 plus S&H.

This place has a bunch of fans for good prices but I have no idea of quality etc. http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm/subsection/18

Thanks Dave! I found SilenX fans here: http://www.directron.com/ixp5214.html for a pretty good price - $9 or less. Noise is 14dba - is that good? I can even get designed grills!

Cristy;
14db is great. A whisper is about 25-30db and human hearing drops off at about 15-ish. CPU fans generally run about 20-25 db.
When you decide to pull the trigger, give me a shout. I need a new fan for my orchidarium. Probably go with one of the same and a set of rubber mounting grommets.
Cheers.

Re: Recomendations for fans
I noticed it only pushed 24 cfm, is that low? I couldn't find any specs on the fans I use but the fans at the surplus store were all 100 cfm and up to 240 cfm.
Sincerely,
Tim
