So I recently came upon a free 30 cube from a friend who was consolidating tanks. It's an Oceanic and has the really thick glass. The top rim is separating a little bit and has a tiny spot where it looks like something hot melted it.
Can I remove the upper rim to make it look like a rimless tank?

I would think so with no problems at all, I would try a dremel and take your time not to hit the glass, it won't break but will look nasty. After you clean all the silicone from under the top rim you might want to do some resealing in that area or the whole tank depending on the look you want, sometimes their beads of silicone are really wide, good luck.
Sincerely,
Tim

OK. I think I will take the plunge when I'm ready. The corners of the trim are already separating from each other, so I wonder if I can just take a knife under the trim and pry the trim off slowly.
I'm just so nervous about taking the trim off and then going oops, should have left it on.

When I was considering derimming 10gs, I read that Gunk Off combined with LOTS of very sharp razor blades works well. Then a glass file (the type used for stained glass) or a dremel tool is needed to take off the sharp edges.
There are some u-tube videos out there to show you how it is done. Looks like a lot of WORK! (which is why I bought the 5.2g rimmless vs derimming)
