You all got me thinking about the 5 gallon size, so I did some searching and found a tank that I really like. I plan to get three of them and put them side to side with a long silver light perched across all three.
As Jim has pointed out to me, I will likely save the extra cost by not going to the ER for a sliced open finger.
Next step is to figure out what substrate I should get. I know a lot of people use the AquaSoil, but I don't like how it clouds up so easily. Is there another substrate that has good results for breeding shrimp. I would prefer something with a dark color.

Hmmm. Could it be some guy that has bags of it in his shed?Jim Miller wrote:I'd go with Flourite black or Flourite black sand.
I know where you can get some FBS.

Just wondering if something more soil based would be better for the Ph that the shrimp like.
I've read that the fluval stratum ebi doesn't have the ammonia problems that comes with Aquasoil.

I found a light that perches above the lights that looks nice. I am sure it is not the best quality reflectors and all of that, but since I don't plan on making it a hi tech tank they should be fine.FrannyB wrote:Try to find a decent shop light to span the tanks.

If there just going to be breeder tanks, kinda out of sight in the basement mosses and shrimp don't need much light, if your going to use a rack you can hang them from the shelf above.
I've been seeing a lot of folks using Fluval Stratum, bacter balls, etc with shrimp tanks, I have also seen some losses on non cycled tanks, I would make sure your plants are in place and cycle the tanks with a couple of fish that like cooler water, from what i've read shrimp & mosses like cooler water about 75 to 77 degrees, no?
I'm watching and waiting, I want to build a shrimp tank for our living room, almost all diy, but I'm not using any high dollar fauna just something that breeds well, after all it will be my first and I can't afford losses.

Well, I want the shrimp to breed, but I also want the tanks to look nice.
I plan on sticking the foam filters in one of my ECCO canister filters and letting them get full of good bacteria that way. Then, I will try to catch the darn bleeding hearts in my just-arrived-today fish trap, and I will use them to help cycle the tanks.

One (i.e. me) ordered one (fish trap) from AquariumPlants.com. You can get them from other places too, but I was already getting an ECCO filter from them and I had free shipping. https://www.aquariumplants.com/ProductD ... e=AM501.80samsankar wrote:Fish trap?!? What a great idea. How well does it work? And does someone make a shrimp trap?

Just reread your question. You were asking about a SHRIMP (vs. Fish) trap. Yes, one can make their own. I did and I use it to catch shrimp from time to time. Here is some info I found and posted back in May:samsankar wrote:Fish trap?!? What a great idea. How well does it work? And does someone make a shrimp trap?
This DIY project video demonstrates how to make a shrimp trap for a dwarf shrimp tank. Take a transparent plastic bottle, remove the label and cut it below the mouth in a suitable place as shown. Invert the top end and insert it into the lower half. Place some suitable bait at the bottom and submerge it in a small tank. Turn the lights off, if any and leave for a couple of hours. The shrimps get attracted to the smell and are trapped as shown.
