Narrow Leaf Ludwigia and roots

I'm wondering why my newly planted Narrow-Leaf Ludwigia is developing roots so far up the stalk. Shouldn't this be happening closer to the substrate...or preferably in it?

In any event these long new roots are rather unsightly. Would Jobe spikes be in order or is something else wrong here? Here is a picture:

That's what ludwigia does -- grow roots at every node. It will get much more unsightly!

someone once told me to increase the NO3. i dunno if that's true but i'm sure someone else knows if this is useless advice
