Camouflage Squid

Post by Ltrepeter2000 »

Uses a symbiotic bacteria to appear invisible to larger predators while it hunts for food.

Here is another one, well a cuttlefish, same family though.

Too bad the people introducing the clip are not science minded enough to know it is a cephalopod, not a fish.

Amy and I saw a nature show in the 90s about similar creatures (though I can't remember whether they were squid or cuttlefish) in the Caribbean, and it almost made us switch careers, LOL. The idea of studying such cool animals, and where your day job involved snorkeling in the Caribbean, was very attractive. :-)

It's easier to pronounce fish than to pronounce cephalopod.

Here is another fun item about a Sea Hare using their food pigments to churn out noxious chemicals

I wish I could find the clip about the sea slug (sea hare, spanish dancer) that learned to make nematocysts after eating a jelly fish or an anemone (I can't remember which.) It absorbed the first ones it ate and then replicated them and didn't need to eat anymore. This was interesting because nematocysts are like honey bee stingers, one shot deals. A critter absorbing them to use is one thing, absorbing them and then replicating them is another.
