Filtration and Turnover ratio

Post by ricoishere »

I'm curious about the turnover ration other members have for their tanks. I have for one of my 47G, the Eheim Pro III, rated at max T/O rate of 450GPH. I'm replacing it with a 90G, using the same filter. That would give this tank a T/O of (hopefully filter pumps correctly) of 5 times per hour. I know recommendation is 6 times per hour. Planted tanks don't require as much, though. I'm curious how other members filter their tanks.

Damian, Are you happy with their performance? I am considereing going back to using redundant filtration, and adding a sponge filter, but don't feel like rinsing them out weekly!

very happy, noice was the main reason i changed to canisters. these things also add a lot of water flow which is good for my rainbows and is easy to maintain. i change the media (i slack some) every couple months, i only rinse the sponges that come inside, i only rinse the ceramic rings since they are ment to breed bacteria in them. but completely change the carbon. i tried placing a sponge in the intake and it clogs too often so fry beware!

Cool, now how often is your water turning over?

have you tried measuring the rate after running the filter for a month, with the media? I did that, and it seemend mine ran at about 75% of its rate, which I think is OK. I'll stil need another filter though.

And Eheim's push the highest % of water vs. published volumes of about any of the filters.

At a guess, Damian is probably actually pushing about 400 gph.

Yes, need more flow at the least - koralias make for nice powerheads for additional flow.
