47g PLANTED

Post by ricoishere »

Well, this is my 2nd tank. The challenges were a few: A 47G is 31" deep. So I've chosen tall plants for my background. The hardscape seen is about to be changed. It'll be manzanita. The other challenge was location. It sits close to a dining table, and I want it to be viewed from 2 sides, the front and righ side. Hopefully once grown I'll accomplish this. My cigar fish knocked the Java fern over, so that'll be fixed. I planted it about 1 month ago. Similar to the 28G I have, I have quite few red plants here as well.

Looks nice, Rico! Lighting a tank that tall is definitely a challenge. Post an update once you've swapped in the manzanita. :-)

Sure! Thanks for the offer! Let's see how we can make that happen.

The lighting was a challenge. But instead of getting 6 bulbs (10000K/6700K) I spoke with catalina and I decided to go with med/low light plants, and I have 10000K/6700K 7 8700K plant grow. They all seem to be doing fine. I want to see how it looks after a few months. I'm debating on java moss for the manzanita. I've always gotten rid of it in the past because of the pieces floaating away. I want something for the zebra loaches to cram themselves into though. We'll see. Maybe the riccia that's in there will start to grow. I'm definitlely open for suggestions!

Most of the mosses can end up requiring pruning, and float throughout the tank. If you attach to the wood using cotton thread, that'll hopefully help it from going everywhere. You may also want to consider trying Fissidens moss. It still can float throughout the tank, but doesn't grow quite as fast as many of the other ones. (Plus, it's got a very unique aesthetic compared to the others.)

Floating, the Riccia should grow for you, but you may have lighting problems getting it to grow far down in the bottom of the tank. Only one way to find out, though. ;-)

I know a number of GWAPA members are growing it, and it does show up in the meeting auctions from time to time. If not, there's often folks on aquaticplantcentral.com and plantedtank.net that sell it online in their For Sale forums.

I'll look to see if I have any in my 75g I can pull. Not sure, and can't rip up the 180g yet, have AGA contest yet to grow out for...

Fair warning, Fissidens looks like a little pile of green poo outside of water! ;) (It is kind of funny that those who don't know it never buy it but then see it in tanks and go ooooo!)

Thanks for the warning! Let me know how we can connect. As a matter of fact, to you, ingg, ddavila06, and Kris: I will gladly trade a few items I have that I'm sure might be of value (some are already committed to Kris). I have a few, surgical instruments like scissors and forceps, they're about 5-7" long, but they're stainless steel and great when planting small grasses and pruning plants. I will gladly trade these for some plants. I most likely will not be able to make it to meeting, but we can work something out.
Oh well, since I just spilled the beans, I'm posting a thread on trading some of these instruments…..
