Well, we got stuck on the beltway on Saturday on the way home. The plants were hot when I got them out of the trunk, and I put them still in the bags in cool water, then planted them. I had hoped everything would be ok, and they looked more-or-less ok for a couple of days, but I got home tonight to find that the UG is totally gone--there are still the white roots left but no leaves at all. The bolbitis and java fern aren't looking too hot, either. Any hope that they'll come back? *sigh*

If the rhizomes didnt mush, those should come back. Ug is probably gone.

Do you bring a cooler? Definitely worth it to do...

I didn't bring a cooler, no way to fit one in the car. That's also why they weren't up front with us--no room. Although if I had known we were going to get stuck on the way home I would have held them in my lap or something...

If it's any consolation, Maggie, I did the same thing to the flame moss I bought from Dave. Before the meeting got started, I put it in my car. When the meeting was over, I went out to my car to put Katie's nano tank and stuff in there, and realized the bag was hot to the touch (stoopid newbie mistakes - see my sig). So I ran the bag under cold water in Ghazanfar's bathroom sink, and asked Judi to take it home with her and put it in a bucket (we were camping in Tuckahoe, and I know it and the other plants I got in the auction would not have survived the weekend). We'll see whether it survives it's brief 100*+ interlude, but so far, it's not looking too brown, so maybe it will eventually flourish.

Maggie! I can totally commiserate on the lack of car space! Although I think you win (by a slight margin). While a big kids cooler may be out of the question, if you had one of those soft-sided lunchbox contraptions and a cool pack you'd be golden. I've got a box full if you're interested I could bring you a few to choose from to the next meeting

Jen makes a good suggestion. I use one of those $2 thermal bags from WalMart w/ a cold pack. They work quite well and you can fit it just about anywhere.

I never even thought about the heat with plants. I usually have a cooler with me, now I just have to remember to use it.

Ooh, good thought on the soft cooler and especially the cold pack. I'm sure there's one around here somewhere, just gotta hunt it down and remember to bring it with me! Then I have to not buy so much stuff. That's going to be the hard part.

I hope some of this stuff does recover, but I guess it's just a lesson learned if it doesn't. At least my driftwood didn't melt!

I am curious as to how hot it got back there. I know it was well over 90 degrees outside, and in the sun and with the 200+ degree engine right there (just a couple of inches away) I'm guessing it got pretty toasty in the boot. Maybe I should be glad the manzanita didn't catch on fire!

Yes, but it's a British car! And you know, British sports cars--you don't want to hurt their feelings or they'll leave you stranded somewhere. Then the plants would really cook! So I gotta throw in "boot" alongside "trunk" every so often.
