Shrimp & Filters

Post by John G »

On the rare occasions when I clean out my canister filter, I find a tablespoon or two of shrimp living in it. I drain the water through a net, and put them back in the aquarium.

Is this common? Do the rest of you find shrimp living in your filter?

And I have noticed that I never see a cherry red shrimp in the filter. But I wonder if perhaps some of them are red, but they lose their color in the dark filter. Any thoughts?

Constantly. I find them every time - even when I screened the intakes.

They are always clear, but they color up after a while in the tank.

I have a pre-filter on my XP2 intake so I shouldn't expect to find any in my filter right?

I thought I lost all the shrimp I bought at the last meeting, but thankfully I was able
to find I still have 5 of them, (that's the most I've been able to find) and 1 is a brownish color.

Yup, I pretty much plan on finding shrimp in the filter. With the Cichlids in my tanks that's pretty much the only way the babies survive. :D

If I don't have prefilters on, yup, the canisters collect shrimp.
Where's the fish? Neptune
