*copied from PVAS to get both sides of ideas*
Ok, as the title states. I am trying a bulletproof design out prior to replicating it for my father (he kept fish in the 70's-early 80's and still thinks an oscar is fine in a 30).
So far the tank has been running with minor issues (one of which I will touch on in a few) for 2?months.
Inhabitants:
6? Free black mollies from last months PVAS meeting. *from a previous post, I stated that they had gotten ich from old gravel. I dont think that they actually did as neither salt+heat (a week of both)nor Quick cure (2 runs of 3 days each) would remove it*
9 Cherry barbs. *These fish are in the same tank, same water as the above mollies and have NEVER shown a sign of ich.
Plants
Narrow leaf Java fern attached to cork which is siliconed to rear glass.
Multiple mosses
Hygro sp. various
Bacopa (not positive on ID of this)
pygmy chain sword
HC(mostly there to see IF it will grow since I have minimal luck with HC so far)
assorted crypts from other tanks.
Lighting:
1 30" T5 FW double bulb Aqualight
1 24" (in a 30" enclosure) T12 double bulb fixture that is older then I am IIRC.
Filtration
2 Old Aquaclear HOB (IIRC a 300 and a 500) with random sponges doing little other then biological filtration
1 powerhead (the rotating one, I cant remember the name) with a sponge filter attached to do some more "filtration"
None of the sponges have been cleaned or changed since setup.
Substrate:
OLD black giant gravel with Schultz's aquatic plant soil mixed in on top of some Jobe's plant sticks and Osmocote.
Other then weekly-biweekly water changes, nothing is added to the tank other then food. Plant growth is present but not spectacular, fish are very happy and content. Filters have not been cleaned in 2 months (at least) and there are no issues.
Anyone got anything to add to make it a bit more bullet proof or similar?
