Photography - Close-up shots

I was wondering if anyone knows how to achieve those extreme close-up shots? A great example is the Amano shrimp on the frontpage of GG's website. Is this done simply using a camera with a high "Zoom" ratio, or is this a type of lens that's added?

Actually that shot was taken with the standard lens.
I never use the zoom. Get as close to the subject
as possible. With the Sony I use - with
standard lens - that's 2cm.

What camera do you have?

Somehow I missed your reply on this. I'm using the Olympus C-3030 Zoom camera, and have an external flash with it... I need to get/make an extension cord for the external flash though, as it's only 2-3 feet long, if that.

HEY!! I have an Olympus 3030.. or is it 3040 I don't know, but it's close. I can't get a pic worth a crap of my tank. Any tips you've discovered? New camera?

This camera is a few years old... It's actually a my work's camera, that I borrow on occasion. I usually take about 1 good picture, for every 20-30 pictures taken. I've had some good success going from ISO100-ISO400 and back, depending on the shot. The external flash definitely help a little bit. I tend to get better pictures using the MF (manual focus) mode, but then again, I tend to also get a lot of out-of-focus pics that way too, when the fish moves. Lastly, I tinker around with the brightness settings.

So, to conclude: No tips except:
1. <em>Get a big memory card so you can mess up enough without having to stop to delete bad pictures! </em> <img border="0" src="smileys/smiley2.gif" border="0">

2. Plants are easier to photograph, as they don't move!

Even with a 2-3 foot extension cord you should be
able to get decent pics. I think I may hold a informal
photography workshop at my place sometime soon. People
can bring their cameras and we can play around with
taking pictures.

I can't get a decent shot taking a pic of my plants.

This would be pretty cool. I tried a few things from the Aquarium Photography meeting last month, but more practice would definitely help! Speaking of which... Ghazanfar, what do you think of posting the slides from that workshop?

If you really want to get good pics of your tank have Ghazanfar come over to your house to take them. So far those are the only good pics of my tank. (except for my old 35mm).

I would be for having another photo workshop.
