I do like dark substrates, for the same reason - I may lose a bit of light not reflected upward, but the look of the tank is better to me. That is my substitute for tannin-stained water. My lights are too low for tannins, nothing would grow. I really like the picture of GG's shrimp tank w/EC - that looks good to me.
The tank in question is an antique 50 to be reset for South American puffers, which should show well against dark substrate, and it should support the needed swords well. Perhaps too well...but that won't be too fast with my lighting.

With EC can one really set up a system from scratch and add a realistic bio-load of livestock right from the get-go?

Realistic bioload is like 6 species of stem plants and some snails, right? <img border="0" src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0"> I still haven't added any livestock to my 15 setup with this stuff, its been about 2 months now. I'm not so sure I buy their bacteria claims tho, why not pack full the tank full of fast growing stems, let them settle in for a week then start stocking slowly to be safe?
