K, I'll get the plans drawn up quick.
Snagging the lumber is no problem.
I'm planning an 8" tall base wood, 6" tall canopy face. This give us 4 1/2"-5" space over the tank after we hide the top plastic of the tank. About 6' of 1x8 (base and canopy top), 4' of 1x6 (canopy faces), 10' of 1x2 or 1x3 (trims to be routed to hide tank base and wrap canopy face) should do it. Not planning on placing in a solid shelf to sit it on, only the rim of the wood, as these things are not heavy, and shouldn't crack themselves via weight.
Need some help on the plan dwaring front. Dimensions of tanks for stand/canopy are different than published tank sizes because of the plastic rims.
Can someone post up here...
Take the dimensions, length and width, of the top rim. It angles, like /|, away from the glass, I need the dimension at the widest point of that rim so the canopy fits over it.
Also need exact dimension of the footprint. We'll be hiding the black plastic under trim, so same thing, dimension at the widest point.
To the 1/16" if you can, 1/8" is okay, I plan to build a little give in this.

First pass at plans
Trying to keep it basic.
We use a dado to make the funky little connections you see in plan on 1x8 and 1x6 base material of stand and canopy.
It should make for a far stronger glue connection, then tack it together with some finish nails.
We can use 1x3, routed, to make trim pieces. The top piece of the canopy is just a 1x3 ripped in half.
The 6 3/16" you see in the middle is the glass area of the tank. I made it so the trim pieces will by offset heightwise 1" (base up, and canopy down, of course) to hide the black plastic of the tank itself. The tank site on the 1x8, canopy 1x6 sits on the tank.
I have a few bits for the router, so we can do quarter round or something a bit fancier...
What do you guys think of this? Height wise and all it work okay for you? Ends up about 21" tall with base and canopy, with an open back on the canopy for lights/filter access.
EDIT IN:
Going to need to know for sure how many we are making beforehand - I don't have a really good way to cut this 1x8 really square, so am planning to bring it to a friend's house who has a radial arm saw beforehand for us...
So far we have -

Ghanzafar - 2

Neelan - 1
May try and make a mockup before this week's meeting to show it to folks.

Got to thinking after I posted this -
If I alter the canopy to ride outside the edges of the top with runners to support it, we might be able to leave the legs on the lights. Couple of extra passes with the dado blade to make an insert spot for the legs, and whammo. I'll draw it altered and post it...
Anyone know the height of these lights? Like, how high above the top of the tank the top of the light is?
EDIT: I know another way to do it that keeps it closer to the same dimensions, need to see the light mounted tho. Going to ask someone to bring one of these to the meeting who has it from last year.

I'm pretty sure I'll have a base with me at the meeting this weekend. Won't be poly'd yet for sure, but should be able to get it together and have one coat of stain on it. Let y'all see what it'll look like.
We should be able to have them cut, assembled with glue and nail, and puttied in one day easy - you guys will hafta sand the joint putty (only takes a minute or two by hand) and stain them at home though - we might get time to sand, not sure.
