If you have previous versions of PS you can upgrade for a fraction of the cost.

I have a book on CS2 that is pretty nice put out by Scott Kelby. Set by set, easy and advanced stuff included

Exactly! CS2 is still $300.00 after the student discount. I don't like my photos that much. ;)

I upgraded from 7 to CS and it made a big difference to how I work with it. The interface is even a lot better. I've never tried Elements.
