Ember tetra in filter

Post by Judi »

I hadn't cleaned out the canister filter on my 20 gallon in --well, I'm just too embarrassed to say. I finally cleaned it out today, and found an almost fully grown ember tetra in there!

That's one hardy little fish to survive that. What a tough little guy!! Now use him as a feeder. (JUST kidding)

Someone should design a filter with a light inside. That way when we save fry and baby shrimp, the light isn't a shock to their system!

I cleaned out my 2213 last night and found 1 kerri tetra (bigger than I would have thought) and 8 tiny ancistrus, 6 of which are now in another tank. Sadly, 2 got squished when I rinsed out the coarse filter pad.

Poor squished ancistrus. :( I wonder if I squished anybody without realizing when I cleaned the filter sponges.

I squish about 100 cherry shrimp everytime I clean my filters! I remember a time when I spent an hour plus fishing all them out!

One of the reasons I like the Rena Filstars is that their canister is translucent, so it's easy for me to see whether I have fry or shrimp living in my canister (which I have had happen) *before* I open it up. Putting sponge pre-filters over the filter intake seems to have solved that problem. Of course, now I have large sponges in my tanks to try and hide, so that's a bit of a trade-off.
