I'd like to here anyone's recommendations for canister filters. I think I'm getting a 75 gallon tank from a (soon to be former) reef keeper and I'm gonna want to move the water around a bit. I love these "reefer" you can pick up stuff from them so cheaply.

all i can say is EHEIM. I have the ECCO series. The largest one on my 75gal. I know other people have different models than this, but i chose this one for price and functionality. plus, it's self-priming which is nice. the wet/dry professional series is really nice. I think they are supposed to be the best around as far as cannister manufacturers. they are a bit more expensive, but I think they're worth it. it also depends on what you want to do. if you want water movement, I also have a tetratec 500, which i bought w/o knowing anything. it is kinda loud, but it moves water like crazy...i think too much for a lot of fish and plants.

Just to be a little different
I broke an Eheim Ecco which I'm replacing with a Filstar XP1. I was
injecting into canister, had problems with vapor lock which required
me to reprime more often that I should have needed... the auto-
siphon mechanism broke and now it doesn't seal properly. When I
posted this experience I was later informed that the Ecco are "cheap"
relative to the other models but in my mind this defeats the purpose
of branding.
Build a reactor for sure and you won't have this problem if you only
reprime once-twice a month... I just didn't feel like spending all that
money again, heard filstars are okay so I'm giving one a whirl, I'm
using a reactor very similar in design to that on Ghazanfar's
website... It's easy to find odd PVC parts (2" to 1/2" bushing for
example) at http://www.mcmaster.com/, shipping is dirt cheap and
fast... Make sure you get CO2 worked out before critters/plants/
lights, Ghazanfar-style reactors are way efficient - I gassed some
fish using the same rate I was injecting into the canister...

I have two fluval 404 on my 75. I am happy with how easy they are to clean. They never clog. They are not too expensive. The aquastop feature is nice compared to having to close two differant valves to cut of the water.
They are a little bit noisy.
I have never had a eheim but it seems the only one with an aquastop like feature is pretty expensive.
To each his own.

what's aquastop? also, as far as never clogging, how long have you left it without rinsing it out? I let my eheim go for about 3 months.
I am interested to know about the filstar. that's another great thing about this club (and other clubs)...being able to get input from a variety of people.

Aqua stop is a lever on top of the canistar that cuts off the water to filter. To clean the filter, unplug it lift the lever up. Thats it. It is ready to clean. The valve holds really well. I have never had them leak.
Some of the more expensive Ehiems have a similar setup. I really like the aquastop because it is so easy to clean. And Yes I still have to clean it every two months or so.
