Discus Plants

Post by Ltrepeter2000 »

I am getting mixed results searching for what plants work well in a planted Discus tank. The water will be in the mid to upper 80's and slightly acidic. I was wondering if someone in the group that has discus already could give me a suggested plant list that I should pursue.

Thanks
Rob

If you go to www.tropica.com there's a drop-down list under the "Species" list. It will list Discus compatible plants. I can add a few that I have found will cope with the high temp:
Ceratopteris (Watersprite)
Lysimachia nummularia or Moneywort
Nymphoides aquatica

It's just not true that discus need water temps in the mid to high 80's. Unless you are breeding discus they will do just fine in water that is 80 degrees and so will most plants at that.

If you are set on the higher temps Pogostemon stellatus will do very well in warm waters like you described. Most anubias, swords, and crypts will do okay as well. Mosses however, like cooler water and should be avoided at those temps.

Thanks
I am just trying to keep the discus in the range that they were raised in to not shock there system. I picked them up and the breeder had the fry tank at 90 degrees. Just was trying to mirror the surroundings as much as possible

Oh, that's understandable, but you could feasably lower the temp a couple degrees every few days until you got it lower.

I would take a look at some of the plants used in the discus tanks of the AGA competitions too. They are really aren't demanding fish, unless you want to grow "perfect", round, long lived fish (8yr+).

Where do I look for the AGA competition results. I would be interested in seeing how some of the winners were set up.

Thanks

I think you can be pretty confident with discus in planted tanks. I moved mine into planted tanks with no problems. Incidentally, 3 of the five from the breeder in Fairfax are brown, and two have some blue. I got infatuated with Hans' Discus at the Fish Festival,

and in spite of myself, bought two pigeon red at auction.

Here's another link to planted discus
