Ameca Splendens- Free to good homes(3 Trios available)

Post by Ltrepeter2000 »

I received some of these cool livebearers from a guy that was getting out of the hobby and as I understand it they are considered extinct in the wild. I was hoping someone could tell me where I would locate any laws concerning fish keeping in Virginia to see if I need some kind of permit to keep these fish.

They seem to reproduce almost as readily as guppies.
I may have some of these to move to a good home sometime soon if they keep breeding readily in my tanks. Two of my adult females recently dropped fry. The babies come out at almost a half inch to start with.

Thanks
Rob

Ameca Splendens are also known as the Butterfly Goodeid. Take a look at the following links and see if these look similar to your fish.

http://www.mysapientia.com/camera/fish/ ... mecas.html

Fortunately they are not extinct in the wild. Their range extends from rivers in Mexico into Central America.

For information about the fishing regulations in the Commonwealth of Virginia take a look at the following link:

http://www.dgif.state.va.us/fishing/reg ... index.html

The ameca splenden does not appear on the list of non-native fish that you are requred to obtain a permit/license to keep. Obviously do not dispose of those fish in any stream in Virginia that would be against the law.

If anyone would like to have another livebearer that actually does replicate like guppies I can bring bags of Endler's Livebearers to a meeting. :)

Thanks for the information .....this was exactly what I was looking for. I will let everyone know when I have enough Ameca's to send some to other good homes.

Thanks

Rodcon, I'd be intersted in a few endlers. Have a girlfriend begging for them, and I refuse to pay retail prices for such a thing :)

Hey, if that's what it takes to get you to a meeting, I'm all for it.

Yeah, yeah, Murphy I hear you. I have been having an unusually busy summer. But in order to satisfy all the personal appearance requests things must suffer.

Seriously I will be at the August meeting.

Andy welcome to GWAPA. I too am shocked  at the prices I have seen for Endlers in the stores because there are always many bags available at any Potomac Valley Aquarium Society (www.pvas.com) auction. I remember seeing a pair of endlers being sold by a local fish shop for 10 dollars and I laughed so hard I was crying because I must have had a couple thousand dollars worth of endlers in my little fish room. Anyway I'll bring along a bag of Endler's for you at the August meeting and in no time you will have more than you ever wanted.

I'll second this. They're great little fish, but I got 2 pair from Aaron a few months ago, and now have a tank saturated with at least 50 fish. (There becomes a point where it's impossible to count fish in a swarm!)

I'd like some Endlers, Rodney. Believe it or not, I've been waiting for quite a while to get some!

Christy I can not believe you do not have any Endlers at the last PVAS auction I think there were about ten bags that day.

Sam take your time expanding your tank collection. Besides I think you could keep them in a bucket.

I am shocked  that Endlers are bringing this much interest. Maybe I will put them into the auction at the August meeting with the proceeds donated to GWAPA.

Sort of an Endler's club donation. :)
