New small heater

Post by jweis »

Kens Fish is now selling a new line of small heaters. I wish these heaters had been available when I was setting up my small 5.2g shrimp tanks. I especially like that these heaters have a LED that displays both the Set Temp and TankTemp simultaneously.

Julie, I've had similar heaters in the past where the heater displayed both set and tank temps. I still ended up checking water temp with a probe due to some of the heaters providing incorrect temps. Nowadays, I would much rather save the money and just buy two glass heaters - one set higher and one lower as backup. Also works very well during cold nights where both heaters maybe needed. I guess two of these new Cobalt heaters will be even better if money was no object. ;)

Interesting. I don't have enough room in my little shirmp tanks for two heaters though. After having one glass heater shatter on me once, I vowed to never own another one again. I often do my tank maintenance late at night and that is when I am most likely to forget to unplug the heater before lowering the water level. I try to buy only "julie proof" aquarium equipment!

I can certainly relate to the glass shattering part. Have you considered the under gravel heater typically used for reptiles? That might work better/cleaner in a nano tank.

Yes, I did consider an undergravel, but most of them were only for up to 4g tanks and my nanos are an odd size 5.2g. Also if I recall correctly the undergravel ones came with a preset temp and they weren't adjustable. I wanted to be able to set the tanks to different temps depending on the type of shrimp I had in each of my three shrimp tanks.

I took the heater out of my 2.5 gallon before adding the live stock and they have done well, I have only check the water temp a few times and it was mostly 73 degrees or very close to that, it will be interesting to see what happens over the winter as temps drop.
Sincerely,
Tim
