If you google "epa claims a 93% increase in risk for cancer using chlorinated water" you will get dozens of citings and references to studies performed - some as early as 1987.
the first 10 references all cite the epa study and the ecosmarte-arizona study lists the following ---
Published Chlorine Hazards
• “The EPA has raised skin absorption of chlorine to its top 10 carcinogen watch list.” The Washington
Post – June 1994
• “Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than those whose water does not
contain chlorine.” U.S. Council of Environmental Quality
• “We are quite convinced, based on this study, that there is an association between cancer and chlorinated
water… There is a clear pattern between consumption of chlorinated water and rectal and bladder cancer.”
Dr. Robert Morris, Medical College of Wisconsin research team. A complete copy of the results of there
study is available at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2002/11/prweb49983.htm
• Up to 2/3 of the harmful effects of chlorine are due to inhalation and skin absorption while showering."
The American Journal Of Public Health
• "One common factor among women with breast cancer is that they all have 50-60% higher levels of
these chlorination by-products (THMs) in their fat tissue than women without breast cancer..."
BreastCancerFund.org
• Long-term drinking of chlorinated water appears to increase a person's risk of developing bladder cancer
as much as 80%," according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Some
45,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with bladder cancer. St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press,
Dec. 17, 1987
• "Showering is suspected as the primary cause of elevated levels of chloroform in nearly every home
because of chlorine in the water." Dr Lance Wallace, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
• We are learning the hard way that all the time we thought we were preventing epidemics of one disease‚
we were creating another. Two decades after the start of chlorinating our drinking water the present
epidemic of heart trouble and cancer began." Coronaries/Cholesterol/Chlorine, Dr. Joseph M. Price, PhD
• Finnish Study Links Chlorinated Water to Cancer – Thelma McAdams,
http://www.hans.org/chlorine.html
I am not an alarmist but we have been on well water for the past 25 years and I can tell you since we moved into this house (just two months ago) - our first on city water - both my wife and both our kids refuse to drink the water because it makes them sick. The smell of the chlorine in the water is nauseating and we all hate to swim in any chlorine treated pools (as well as take showers with this city treated water) because of the skin absorption potential. Since I have to treat the water for my fish to exist it must necessarily follow that there is a problem and I don't want to chance the potential risks since I can solve the problem fairly easily.

Re: Reverse Osmosis water system
I didn’t get the same thing when I googled it. The reference you seemed to rely on referred to the US Council of Environmental Quality, not the EPA which is a different organization. And nowhere in the references could I find a link to the original source of the claim. The claim was sometimes included in sites sponsored by water filter companies…not the most objective source of information. And most of the links referred to the danger of chlorinated water on the skin (e.g., long showers, or swimming in chlorinated pools), quite a different thing that the danger of drinking it.
We should let this get back on topic. We can continue off line if you would like. I’d still like to see a link to any study that claims that there is a 93% increase in cancer if you drink chlorinated water.

Re: Reverse Osmosis water system
So, I have spent more time than I thought possible researching the different remineralization options for RO water. From what I have read my little shrimp are more picky than most fish, so I am going to use Mosura Mineral Plus Ultra. According to the information I found it replenishes pure RO/DI water with the minerals shrimp need, yet it does not alter the pH and KH, but will increase the tank's GH value. I also bought an TDS tester.
I understand there are less expensive options out there, but I don't want to mess with chemistry that I don't completely understand and risk killing my shrimp.
So once all my new goodies arrive, I just need to hook it all up and keep my fingers crossed that I don't mess it up and end up spending a fortune to kill my critters.

Actually I just changed my mind on the reminerization product. I found something that is suppose to be very similar and much less expensive that was developed by some well known German shrimp breeders. http://www.alphaprobreeders.com/bee-shr ... 000-grams/jweis wrote:So, I have spent more time than I thought possible researching the different remineralization options for RO water. Re: Reverse Osmosis water system
I think you'll be pleased with the result of raising your shrimp in RO water but the Bee-Shrimp Mineral GH+ reads as about the same thing as Equilibrium as far as I can see, never the less it will work fine.

Re: Reverse Osmosis water system
I installed my RODI system today. I really like the system I bought from Bulk Reef Supply. They have great videos that made the setup easy. I only needed one trip to HomeDepot for a mounting board and a long piece of tubing since my water storage tank is on the other side of the room. I have the system mounted over the mudroom sink, then I run a line of tubing across the room (taped down in front of the doggie door) and then into the holding tank.

Nice job Julie. Let us know how it works out for you.
Re: Reverse Osmosis water system
Sweeeet!!! did you put a heater in your holding tank??? Also I sealed my tank good enough to keep out bugs and flying detergent or other household cleaner that could contaminate the water, just a thought. How much pressure is your system producing with the booster pump??
Sincerely,
Tim

Re: Reverse Osmosis water system
Yes, I have a heater in my holding tank. It is one of those that is not made out of glass so I can't forget to unplug it before taking it out of the water and have it shatter all over the place (did that once, and learned that lesson very quickly).150EH wrote:Sweeeet!!! did you put a heater in your holding tank??? The tote seals up pretty good. The hole I made for the output tubing is just the right size, so I don't think any critters can get in.
With the booster pump the gauge is reading 90psi. I stayed up late to make sure the float valve and booster pump shut off mechanisms work (both did).
Tomorrow the TDS tester and the remineralization product are suppose to arrive, so I will replenish the water and then do a 25% water change.
I keep thinking I have bought every possible thing I need for my aquariums, but I still find ways to spend more money on them. I am very resourceful that way!
