RO Algae???

Post by 150EH »

I've just had my RO/DI holding tank up and running for 2 weeks and today was my second water change using the RO water, I forgot to turn on the heater in the holding tank so as the water came into the tank the temperature dropped from 77 to around 74 and the lower 10 inches of water got cloudy just like fog rolling in, but I was setting here typing away my advise on BBA and turned to see that some type of thread algae had attacked due to the cold water, I'm guessing the water came into the tank around 70 degree's or a little cooler as it was only a 40% water change.

Any ideas why it happened??? This is a high flow area with the spray bar just out of frame to the right and I'm not sure it'algae and it may just be something that solidified due to the cold water but it removes easily with a brush.

You're seeing that algae within minutes of adding water?

It looks more like something sloughing off the sag ....

RO Algae???

A four degree rapid temp change shouldn't hurt critters. Think of what happens during a big tstorm and subsequent runoff. Such events might even induce breeding in some species.

It looks like that awful thread algae I had in my 11g. Kill it right away, or it will quickly take over. Evil stuff.

Thanks everybody for taking a look, I need the above text translated for me "aquariums for dummies" but this sounds about right, these threads turned up with five minutes, I removed the bulk of it with a bottle brush and the rest was gone by the time the temperature got back up to 77 degrees. Some of the fish were eating it and it was too thick for algae and it had to be something that was free flowing at 77 and solidified at 70, like my surface scum. It was definitely strange and I've never seen anything appear the go with such a short time period, I would still like to know what it was.
Sincerely,
Tim
