I'm looking at getting a powerhead to help with dead spots and flow.
I checked out Guitarfish, kris' blog and all his tanks have a powerhead or two for flow.
My tank is 36" long and 18 wide - I'd like to place one at one end and push the water back towards the intake. Would the Koralia Nano 240 or 425 be a good choice. I have visions of my rotala being bent sideways and fish being blasted out of the water - What do you use in your tanks?
(alternatively, a larger filter than the 406 could give me more turnover and thus more flow)

Powerhead/Pump recommendations for flow
I have a koralia nano 240 in my 29gallon tank, and it does a fantastic job. I have it placed so that most of the flow is hitting the back glass. This way it doesn't bend any plants, and still circulates water around the tank.

Re: Powerhead/Pump recommendations for flow
Well, it works. Two for one - what little surface film disappeared and increase surface agitation. It's not too strong - I think the 425 would be too much for a planted tank that's 36" If this were 48" the 425 would be a better choice.
I've parked it at the right in back facing up and it helps churn the water in a circular fashion. I have noticed what hair algae that appeared on the leaves in that area is gone. It was a flow dead spot.

I have used the JBJ circulation pumps with good results, they are a little smaller that the Hydor models and the price is right at Marine Depot, mine were 550 gph and they have a wide gentle flow and 2 pumps with a wave maker was about $70, you can also buy them seperately and they have 1600 gph model as well. I used 2 in my 150 with good result with one near the surface and the other near the substrate and I could have used the larger models without blowing my plants over but my tank is 48 inches long, good luck.
Sincerely,
