Wooden airstones as diffusers

Post by FrannyB »

I have a couple of farm tanks that will need C02 injection and I was pondering using wood airstones as diffusers instead of paying for glass. The wooden airstones are way cheaper and are least likely to break from me manhandling them.

Does anyone have an opinion on using the wood airstones vs the glass diffusers?

I've been using the wood airstones and love them. The bubbles are small and fairly uniform. It is easy for me to hide mine in the plants and when I use black air tubing with my black background, it disappears.

Where's your source? How long do they last before having to change them out?

If I remember right, Jen uses plecos to munch on the wooden airstones so that they don't get clogged.

You can get them @ TFP on Saturday. They are with the skimmers.

Cheers.

You can get them at any place that sells marine stuff. I think that I may have seen them at PetSmart lately.

At Marine Depot they are $6.99 by Lee's but it has their name stamped on it.

I've never took notice of these before and never heard of limewood either, is it just the smaller bubble that would make it work as a diffuser.
Sincerely,
Tim

Wait till Sat... they are 1.99 at TFP. I like the wood better than the glass diffusers. My glass ones are always clogged with algae and it takes a long soak in bleach to kill it - Hydrogen peroxide did not work for me. No algae has grown on my wood airstone yet, but when it does I'll just sand it off a bit.

I've been using wood for my CO2 forever now. The plecos love to keep them clean, I think once I took one out and scraped the algae off by hand. When they get chewed down enough or the bubbles get too big I replace. Couldn't be much easier. And yes, you find them in the marine section. Petco and petsmart have both had them when I have looked...
