CO2 Diffuser

Post by Ben Belton »

I have one of THESE plumbed into the exiting hose of my canister filter. I'm pushing a lot of CO2 into it to keep my tank at the right level, and it comes out the spray bar as a not so fine mist. It's pretty distracting and detracting. My water looks cloudy in the top few inches.

I thought about plumbing it into the intake so it will have more time to dissolve before it comes out. I'm concerned with gas building up in the filter, stalling it out, and burning up the motor. They aren't cheap, but I know people do this.

What do you think?

Eheim

I was thinking too that if the CO2 dissolved better because of the longer path through the filter, I might be able to cut it down a little as well.

I have one set up with my ECCO filter, and it works just fine. I don't see lots of distracting bubbles.

I wanted to report that right after these posts I plumbed my CO2 into the intake of my filter like I was asking about. So far I haven't had any trouble. I still have a very few tiny bubbles, and rarely a small burp, but on the whole, I think I only notice because I'm looking. Also like I thought, I was able to turn the CO2 down and get the same level because now it has more time to dissolve.

I just ordered the $20 Up Aqua 16/22mm from the NY guy on Ebay. I want to compare it to my RG aka counterflow reactor. It's currently being fed by my Eheim 2078. I'm moving it this weekend to be driven by the Eheim 1260 which has 4-5x the flow rate. I'm not satisfied with the dissolution rate when driven by the 2078.

After the water passes through my filter it goes to my in-line heater, and then finally to the Sera Flore CO2 Reactor 500 before it goes into the aquarium.

From the description it sounds like the flow of the canister turns a little turbine inside the Sera Flore to smash up the CO2. Hadn't seen that one before.

I'll have to look at it when the club meets at your place in September.

Thanks

Jim
