I wondered about less expensive solutions to the white eheim filters. Is there a particular kind of poly batting that people use? I seem to recall reading somewhere that some of the batting has chemicals and others do not. I would much rather just cut my own circles than paying so much for the eheim filters.

Cheapest you can find most likely. What you need to be careful of is that it is NOT fire retardant - most bats meant for pilow stuffing and such are fire retardant, and that is the chemical you are trying to avoid.

The loose fill I've been using simply says 100% polyester. Makes no overt mention (that I noticed) of fire retardants. If it does contain such, it hasn't killed anything.

Question:

I have a question. I have been wondering about something relative to fertz and products like Purigen (or even like Seachem Prime). It might be a newbie kinda question though I have to ask:

NPK are critical macros. In many cases, we dose to get the appropriate levels including of Nitrates (Nitrogen). So, when we use Seachem Prime, in the short term, and Purigen, for a long-term, how does it impact nitrogen (nitrate) levels? Does it undo what we are doing?

Otherwise, what a great product, plus regenerative... sweet! ~T(M)~

Good question.

On the Seachem site it says that "Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds." It doesn't say that it actually removes nitrates. You should write to Seachem to ask.

"Prime® also contains a binder which renders ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic." I use Prime, but have no trouble maintaining nitrate levels. I suspect that it isn't active for long enough to interfere with dosing.
