Dry micros vs. Flourish

Post by DonkeyFish »

So I have the CSM+B dry mix and have used it in the past but have always had wicked algae outbreaks when I use it. Been using Flourish happily, but ran out and was contemplating mixing up some more of the dry ferts to try again.

Has anyone else had issues with the dry mix or have any suggestions for me on dosage/usage? I've noticed some on here who dose dry macros, but use Flourish for micros... time to explain yourselves! :)

I have used dry mix for a long time and found PPS Pro dosing to be good for my tank. I was dosing 5mls a day for trace & phos/nitrate for a 70 gallons with 220W and medium growth plants.

I have switch back to Flourish for the trace mix because even with acid buffer in the trace I could keep the growth out of the bottle. And I am too lazy to put it in the fridge.
So currently using Flourish at about 7ml daily and PPS phos/nitrate at about 5mls.

Hope that helps.

I have been using CSM+B for about 3 years now, (since I started keeping plants) and I dose PPS PRO for my micros and macros. I have had and do have algae in my 50B. Right now I am seeing some green on the tank glass; but it's been two weeks since my last PWC. I have had some clado now and then. Not sure exactly why. I have had some BBA in the past, but I think that was because my CO2 was too low. I have no BBA now.

I store my mixed ferts in Gatorade bottles, and keep them in a wooden cabinet in my basement (where my tanks are) so they are out of the light, and in 72F environment. I've never had any issues with my mixes.

I do not check my water parameters. If I see a problem, then I will check my water parameters and do a little research and try to correct the problem. Otherwise, it's just regular dosing, and weekly partial water changes.

I'm not sure what kind of algae excess Fe would cause, or if it is even possible to overdose micros. CSM+B has a slightly higher copper content than Flourish, and that may be a concern if you have inverts, other than that I don't know what harm there would be from using CSM+B.

I have a lot of PMDD mix if anyone is interested I could bring some to split.

I bought a bunch at a PVAS meeting. Probably enough to turn the Bay green.
