What's up with my blyxa?

Post by B Considine »

All my B. japonica has uprooted from the substrate (mineralized with thick cap of colorquartz). None of the stems have any roots on them.

What's the cause, and how to correct?

I think that's one of the plants that Dave mentioned that doesnt do well in a mineralized soil setup.

Fair enough. Time to try something different...

LOL, I thought that was just what blyxa does? It's always done that in my tanks, regardless of substrate. Note that I no longer have any, nor do I bother trying to grow it.

I have healthy growing Blyxa in my mineralized soil substrate ( with and without water column fertilization - although it does better with ) so don't give up. I have to agree with Chris , I just think the floating is something that Blyxa does. Not always though. Most of the times it stays put. Since I do not monitor the water conditions I am not sure what are the triggers that makes it wander about .

I also remember hearing a while back that Blyxa J. does prefer water column fertilization.

Too late. Already replaced it with some crypt wendtii red or bronze. And while the loss of the blyxa has aesthetic fallout, I'll chalk this one up to "learning experience".

I'll send the sad, rootless remainders to the meeting Saturday. I can always try japonica or auberti later, when Kris does one of his periodic thin outs...
