Thanks, Rico. That's beautiful grey slate! Were the construction workers OK with you collecting the rock? I'm a bit concerned about trespassing.

I love rocks (they speak to me! LOL!). But don't know much about them. What are the predominant types found in the Maryland area? I also make terrariums, and I'm always looking for Suiseki-type rocks. Wish there was a place where i could legally collect nice specimens.

Many years ago, I collected some lovely dark grey rocks from the Gunpowder, which are currently in my 40g. They did not change the pH of the water, so it was safe to use. That was a fun spot, it was in North Baltimore county off Harford road. Wish I remembered that location. There was a small spring-fed pool off the main river, about the size of a bathtub that was teeming with little minnows and darters. I remember emersing myself in it, with a snorkel, and hung out to with the tiny fish that came right up to me, quite fearlessly, to investigate and nip at the hairs on my arms (and legs - ticklish!). It was quite an experience. Wonderful!

I spoke with some of the members of the church where this excavating is going on, and they seemed OK with it. I haven't spoken with the pastor, nor seen any contractor to talk with. I'll definitely consider that today though!

Rocks talk to me too ! There's one by my office, and every morning when I go to work, this person is standing right by the coffee machine, oh, not that kind of rock, huh

If you're ever around Round Hill, MD, or Frederick Park, look closely. There is green granite in a few ares. That stuff is extremely hard, and looks pretty cool. If I go there in the near future visiting some friends, I'll make it a point to grab a bucket or 2.
