CO2 cylinder

Post by gconcepcion »

this post is an FYI to anyone looking to add CO2 to their set-up.

After the meeting on saturday, I was convinced to just go ahead and order a brand new 5lb tank from beveragefactory.com for $56 --
I've been watching craigslist for the past two months and haven't seen anything larger than a paintball cylinder

This morning right as I was about to pull the trigger and place the order I decided to check craigslist one more time and low and behold I was lucky enough to score a 20lb tank for $10 with current hydro testing. (I was the 10th caller 15 minutes after the listing went live)

Moral of the story, check craigslist daily and you can eventually score a cheap tank!

Nice score!
Craigslist has been crazy the last few months with fish stuff, it is definitely a good idea to check there if you need anything!

I'm still looking for a 5-10lb tank, too. I'll start checking CL!

I went to Robert's O2 and they tried to convince me that they're 20 year old tank for $61 was just as good as the brand new tank I could order online for $57. Huh? Just as good for now, maybe.

Depends on the material the cannisters are made of that statement might be close to true.

The ones from Beverage Factory are aluminum. The old cannisters are made of steel and are much heavier. I have one of each...

At Roberts you don't actually keep the same tank, you exchange them every time. They maintain the hydrotest on each one so you don't have to. I go to a fire extinguisher company to get my booted tank refilled and hydrotested as needed. I would think if you bought a shiny aluminum tank you'd want to keep it and have it refilled each time.

if you're in the Columbia/Severn area, GTS Gas (410-796-8845) you can exchange or keep the one you have. They only fill 5lbs, but exchange or filll while you wait all other sizes, all the way up to 50lbs.

I believe at Roberts they can fill your own tank if you want them to. Otherwise, they just exchange it. I was there a few days ago and had an aluminum tank. They were not sure if they had any more aluminum cylinders, so they asked me if steel would work or if I wanted to wait/come back to get my original tank.

At my Roberts out here in Sterling I stand and wait for my bottle. Pretty sure the swap is for if you're renting the tank from them. I'm also sure if you walked in with your own aluminum tank and didn't say anything (or pay attention) you could easily walk out with a swapped steel one :)
