Wide-leaf Java Fern??

Post by DonkeyFish »

So I got a crazy mess of plants when I hit a "switching to saltwater" basement cleanout... mostly typical stuff, anubias, narrow leaf java... and something that was specifically called out as "Wide Leaf Java Fern". Surely it appears as such, the leaves themselves aren't terribly long (as you would expect if it was just a big healthy growth), but are about 2-3x as wide as a typical leaf of the same length in a normal java fern.

Is there such a thing??? I don't have much of it, and currently it is NOT thrilled to be here, but would be curious to know if it is anything special or just a freak of nature. Which would then be something special in and of itself, I suppose.

Might also have to grow it out under various conditions, never know. That's part of the pain of the javas evidently. I have seen some "semi-narrows" and "minis" mentioned too, but unless you can compare them under same growth conditions, who knows?

I've also heard it mention that Tropica may have a number of other populations/collections of java fern, but doesn't propagate them because they may not be up to snuff for whatever reason (rate of growth, etc). This implies to me that there is a possibility that cool stuff like this could be around :D

Ok. Here's a really awful picture. Didn't want to try too hard since the condition of the poor plant is dismal and embarrassing :) I admit to having sort-of forgotten about it in a bucket for, well, too long.

Note: I couldn't get the leaves to sit perfectly flat, so take that into account. The pencil is there for scale.

To me, that looks like "regular" java fern, verses the narrow leaf varieties we usually see in the club.

Yeah I'm not sure I could say it's anything special unless you had it in a pic some some standard java fern. Could have been called wide leaved in an effort for it not to be thought to be a narrow or needle... not sure when it's all by its lonesome :)

I did hold it up next to a stand of my "regular" fern, and it was at least 2x wider. It is a good 3-4x wider than the narrow I have.

The guy I got it from also had regular AND narrow. I believe he had a decent understanding of plants.

iiiiiiiinteresting :D If it's nice and broad emersed I know some froggies that would love it :) [The narrow and trident have done well emersed, but while pretty they aren't great for holding frogs lol]

I know all these little variations can be annoying as all get out, but I love the variation.
