If any of you have those really accurate water test kits (I think the brand name is Mellotte, or something like that starting with an M), could you please bring them to the meeting? I don't trust my test kits, and I've had a pH crash in the 20 high that I cannot explain, and I need more data.
Test kits for pH, ammonia, nitrates, KH, GH, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, whatever you have, if it's accurate or well calibrated, I could use the help.
My fish thank you in advance!

Yeah, we *used* to have a population problem in our livebearer community tank, until we added an angelfish. Now, we have one happy angelfish, and we haven't seen any guppy or swordtail fry in months.Cristy Keister wrote:In my experience, Discus are way too slow and lazy to go for anything that can swim like a tetra. Plus, they usually don't try to eat anything bigger than a baby pea. Maybe they aren't so wimpy in the wild, but in captivity they don't bother with much of anything. Angels are quite different - they like to hunt.ingg wrote:Those neons would be snacks for your discus my friend, what do you think they and Angels eat in the wild?
In our discus tank, though, we have a thriving population of red cherry shrimp. Go figure, you think the discus would clean up on the baby shrimp.

I have a NO3 test kit, wont be at the meeting, but I do find the AP NO3 to be accurate with my Lamotte.

Cherry shrimp and small (even baby) tetras have little if any trouble from my Discus. Discus just don't feed or move in the same way as other cichlids. Of course, there are always exceptions and you can get a Discus that behaves differently/more aggressively, but for the most part IME, they can't be bothered to chase after their food.

I'll be there. The veggie chili sounds awesome, btw.
I'll be bringing some A. reineckii and a couple other plant trimmings that I'll need help identifying. (I won these at other auctions and lost the names...)
I'm going to try to build a DIY electrical conduit light stand like the one Aaron demonstrated a while back. Does anyone have a 1/2" conduit bender I could borrow?
And Kris - Could I buy 10' of CO2 tubing from the club supply?

So there's a (potential) new member coming from CCA this weekend, he's specifically looking for "A big bag of java fern", just in case anybody wasn't going to bother trimming you might want to change your mind
He also is looking for (I can hardly believe I'm typing this) SNAILS. LOL. He's trying to start a colony so he can have food supply for (I believe) puffers. He's not picky on what kind. I'm bringing him a big bag of MTS and ramshorns, he asked that I "tell my friends" he's coming and looking for snails!
On that topic, anybody have any interest in MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snails)? I recently converted a tank over to sand and finally found a really good use for them.

It is not murder if you're killing snails.

Just to give folks a head's up, bring your GWAPA cards.
Aquarium Depot has added a few fish just for us to their weekly specials - stop in after the meeting and get 20% off the fish on the list, check it out in their vendor forum.
I stopped there this week and will be stopping to grab coupons for us to bring - the featherfins were some pretty nice stock, mostly males, some good sized double red cac's, and if you haven't yet seen the new electric blue rams, they are really neat!
