bristlenose babies

Post by fredyk »

I have had really good luck with my bristlenose.

I put all my catfish in a 30 gallon: 6 albino cories, 3 bristlenose, 2 upside down, 1 sydodontis, some kuhli loaches, a few guppies and white clouds.

There's a little 3M sand and alot of pleco caves. They get TetraMin Tropical Tablets "The Rich Mix" "food for bottom dwellers" and some TetraMin Tropical Granules.

Buried in there are a few caves.

There have been three spawns in four months! without my doing anything

There is a new spawn, so it seems.

They grow real slow and the larger baby is about one inch long and 3 months old

The nice thing is the male protects the babies, and they come out of the cave fully formed without being spoon fed any baby food. And the catfishes pretty much leave them alone! So it's really alot of fun.

Mark,

If your bristlenose are like mine, once they start spawning, they don't stop! Mine are up to their 9th spawning since the winter. Seems like every time I turn around I find some tiny ones glommed all over everything. I can count the number of spawnings by the size of the dinner crowd around an algae wafer. They have a high mortality rate so far, as I haven't changed my routine any. But there are survivors (usually around 4 out of 8 or 9).

I've been giving them away, but still have more than I need. Next meeting I attend, expect a bag full.

You mentioned that you have cories in with them. I've never spawned bristlenoses, but I wouldn't keep them with spawning cories as I'm thinking they'll eat the cory eggs.

Have you, or anyone else, seen them eating cory eggs?

The cories lay eggs, but they get eaten. don't know much about bristlenose and inter breeding.

Maybe that's why the bristlenose are breeding so well for you. All the cory eggs are conditioning the females!
