Awesome looking shrimp Dave!
I've read that black is dominant and red is recessive, but some also talk about coffee colored ones being produced by the cross. In the bottom pic, the foreground CBS does look coffee colored and the one in the back looks black. Probably just color wash out from the flash. Best of luck with those guys!

I don't think you want to keep them mixed, the red loses out to the black. The progeny will most likely be black unless the black parent has a red gene, then you will get a 3 to 1 mix if it is a straight dominate recessive relationship. If it is a multi gene thing it gets really complicated. Lets think of it this way, reds will breed true, blacks will give a mix, mostly black, if the recessive genes are in the population.
The GOOD thing about keeping them mixed is that the reds are selected for and the genome might benefit from some back crossing with the ancestor stock to strengthen the population. You could get healthier red stock this way. The important thing to do is to be selective with BOTH stocks about the 'grade' of the white banding if you wish to maintain a high 'grade' shrimp. The 'koi-ification' of these shrimp is more than I would every worry about.

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.
If you've got bait, I've got wasabi!
I wish I could be like Mr. Sarcastic when I grow up!

Yep, that is what I read Sean - you put blacks back in to strengthen the stock's bloodlines, as the reds are weak genetically.
The $64,000 question is what is the Bb? You have black BB, red bb... are Bb blacks that can make red? Red that can make black? Chocolate or orange? Some of all? Colors that only make their own colors?
I've read a few conflicting posts on it, so am curious - there are folks reporting a 50/50 mix in mixed tanks, for instance. Others report this is how chocolates/oranges come about (I do have one chocolate in the blacks, so am super curious!) - but if so, why aren't they more common? All CRS breeders have CBS in the tank, are they simply culling ALL of them?
Eventually, I may take it back to almost all reds and a few blacks.... but the blacks are just as if not more striking in a tank to be honest (to me anyhow). For now, I'm just hoping they live and reproduce!

Like I said, if it is a case of multiple genes not just one then it gets complicated and you can have things like the shade variants. CRS breeders are culling anything that doesn't meet their 'standards'. Basically the same way koi breeders cull, and come up with cutsie names for the 'different' patterns of banding and coloration. It's all a farce and the funny thing is how other people buy into it. Ever see the reports about the Japanese koi auctions? Yeah they are pretty shrimp, yeah the different patterns that come out are interesting, no they are not worth $200 each.

Following traditional genetic pronciples;
BB is pure black and should only produce black,
bb is pure red and should only produce red
Bb is the mix and should either look black or possibly some muddy brownish black, and produce 1/4 BB pure black, 1/2 Bb mix that will look like the Bb parents, and 1/4 bb pure red.
Sean; you forget about the laws of market forces. The shrimp are worth $200 to someone
Cheers.

That does not work if it is a single gene location that controls the color. You will not get a gradation of color from a single gene recessive/dominant relationship. You have to have multiple genes involved. Please tell me you haven't forgotten your genetics.... wait, did you take animal genetics or horticultural genetics?DelawareJim wrote:Following traditional genetic pronciples;

Oh no, I'm a plant genetics person. Plants are much more stable than people or animals!!!!SCMurphy wrote: wait, did you take animal genetics or horticultural genetics?
