Who else has Anubias sp. 'Gasser'?

Post by chris_todd »

We planted the Anubias sp. 'Gasser' that we picked up in this month's auction from Aaron, and we were wondering who else in the club has this plant.

It occurred to me that this might be a good candidate for tissue culture, so we can propagate it more readily and get it spread around. So I'm planning on taking a trimming of rhizome and growing it emersed in anticipation of eventually culturing it. Who knows, maybe we can even get it to flower! Has anyone done that yet with this plant?

I used to have this in my 75G. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's there or not. I know it's flowered underwater for me in the past, but I never tried to propagate it. It would be neat to try and TC it!

It would be a good candidate I think. We got this into the club via the Aquafest a couple years ago when FAN made a donation of plants for the auction.

I've only found one article reference online to TC of anubias:
Rapid in vitro multiplication of the aquatic angiosperm, Anubias barteri var. undulata, LI-CHUN HUANG ; YUNG-HUI CHANG ; YU-LI CHANG, Aquatic botany (1994), vol. 47, no1, pp. 77-83.

I haven't obtained a copy of the article yet, but the abstract is available online, and they describe the media they use, which doesn't sound too exotic, except for the thiadiazuron (a cytokinin):

Murashige and Skoog salts, 3% sucrose, 0.8% Sigma Type A
agar and in (mg/liter): 10 thiamine HCl, 10 pyridoxine HCl, 5 nicotinic
acid, 2 glycine, 100 i-inositol, 0.3 BA (N6-benzyladenine), 0.01
thiadiazuron and 0.1 NAA (1-naphthaleneacetic acid)

So I don't think there's any reason we couldn't do this in a Kitchen Culture environment.

The nice thing about culturing aquarium plants is that you don't need to subculture the plants. You can simply plant them in the tank instead. Granted you need a lot of extra tank space. :D

Yeah, but Ghazanfar can pack so many more plants in less space when here gets the TC racks and lighting system set up. Watch out if he starts asking about the copywrite to GWAPA! FAN should be very afraid!

Cheers.

I have a copy of an Anubias tissue culture study that Mike Kane from the AGA lecture sent me. I don't know if it is the same one, but I'll look when I get home. It tells you how to tissue culture anubias, so in the long run, I guess it doesn't matter.

SWEEEET! :D But only level orange? So how do we go to Red Alert? Can we start debating whether Dr. Michael Kane should have used a two-way ANOVA to analyze the effects of IAA supplementation of BA's effects on c. wendtii growth in vitro?

It should have been a multivatiate analysis of a repeated measure.
