My catalina is on legs. Only ones I hung are ov er my 180g, I put them on chains hooked to sliding rails to be able to push them back out of the way.
All my tanks are open topped. I am lazy about keeping glass lids clean, and dirty glass blocks a bunch of light to me.... Filling a topoff takes 5 minutes for 3 tanks for me once a week. Cleaning glass lids takes 20 minutes. I will top off.

That's pretty much my philosophy too. I hate fiddling with glass lids. Not having them has a few downfalls, it makes heating the tank a bit less effecient, jumping fish aren't possible to keep and evaporation is pretty bad in the winter time. However, the accessabililty is worth it to me.ingg wrote:My catalina is on legs. Umm, will the pvc tubing hold the weight and be as sturdy (and be able to be bent with the same simple to get hand tools) as the metal? Very cool option if so! I know about hot boxes for PVC style conduit, but don't know if it can be bent by force by hand.
If the TEK fixture I bought for the 50g hadn't come with legs (bought it used), I would have done the conduit on that tank and hung that fixture too.

Back at the July 2007 meeting, Aaron demonstrated how to build one of these conduit stands. There are some pictures here:

Or, here's a picture of my stand:
