Shelving options
Shelving options
Im searching for a shelving option. Im looking for a 48X18X72 shelving unit and perhaps 48X24X72. Enough to hold some small tanks, the largest would probably be a 20 long. I also want this to store fish related items, you know all that crap that you seem to accumulate! HD, lowes, Target, ect have the wire shelf but they only support 350lbs per pound. The other shelving units that are the steal Z-beam have partial board and I would have to replace that with plywood.
I found these which are ideal, but shipping is as much as the shelf

Then these, shipping is about 30 bucks

Another option is pressure treated 4x4s, 2X4s, and plywood. But with that comes work and more time! So if I can find a suitable commercial option that would be ideal. What is your input on the shelves, think the second link will work? Anyone else looking, there is a discount for 3 or more and we could split shipping via motor freight.

Jeff, at my prior employer, we used shelving similar to that in the second link to hold servers and multiple desktop computers in a small computer lab. If the shelves in the link are anything like the ones we had (and they look similar), I would not trust them to hold the weight of tanks. They are adjustable because there are rubber gaskets that slip into grooves in the vertical posts, and then the shelf has a lip that rests on the gasket. We had some of these things slip on us, when we only had about 150-200 pounds on a shelf, and dump computers onto the floor. Hard to tell from the pictures in the link whether these shelves work the same, but if they were, thought I should give you a heads up.

The one I saw was 77" wide, 24" deep, and 72" high. It had four shelves rated for 2000 lbs each. The price was $149. The frame was steel and the shelves were a very heavy wire mesh. They look very sturdy but if I was using it for my fish tanks I would probably still cut plywood sheets to put over each shelf as an added measure. If I recall, Rob Peterson had the same exact unit in his fish room with a 75 gallon tank on one of the shelves.
