A Return to Fish

Post by rich_one »

Okay... so as I am getting closer to finally kicking off the setup of my bedroom tank, I am thinking of how I want to go. I went invert crazy lately on my other two tanks, so I think I will go back to my fish roots on this one. I am thinking of doing rams and furcata rainbows as the feature fish. does anyone see an issue here? it is a standard 55 gallon tank. my return to discus is on hold for now.

i have them both in different tanks and both don't bother anyone. have you tought what kind of rams you will be doing? i have bolivians from eugen and they are extremely nice and healthy. i also have a small group of furcatas since that crazy order a few months ago and they are doing great too. what else are you doing?

still working it out. so far, I know I would definitely like to house the rams with the furcatas, if possible.

I plan to get the rams from a club member who has them... his are bolivian. we have communicated back and forth about it from time to time, but it has never quite come to fruition. however, if he still has them when this tank is ready, this is where they'll be going. I have long wanted the furcatas, but I got major mixed reactions on whether they would mow my shrimp or not... so I erred on the side of caution, and those I trust most. certainly, there will be one or two bn plecos in here, but aside from that, I am not sure. the only shrimp I see myself trying is maybe amanos... but I am not pressed for that in this tank.

anyway... I'm rambling because I don't have the plan complete yet... LOL... suffice it to say, this is still a work in progress, as to what I will be ultimately stocking it with.

you could also do the clown plecos, stay pretty small and are slightly different to the bushynoses as far as coloration goes, good luck and keep posting :D

I have a couple Bolivian Rams. Awesome fish. I have two males, they bicker a bit, but neither is aggressive enough to really hurt the other. The dominant one tries to bully my killi during feeding time but she's too busy eating to pay him any attention. Worst part about these fish is they're not easy to sex. I think vent shape is probably the best way. Mine have several differences which could identify either as a member of either sex, but their vents look the same. Pretty sure they're both males. Anyone have a female for trade?

I looked up the furcatas (Pseudomugil furcatus?). VERY nice fish! Seems like they want to spend most of their time at the top. Wish I had room for rainbowfish :(

yeah... those furcatas are incredible, and I have a source for them too. so I am eager to get them. I think I will try to get maybe 5 or so rams, and see if any pair up from there. we'll see what happens. but yeah... I was thinking this would work, because furcatas like the top region, and rams like the bottom.

damian, I had not thought of clown plecos... hmm... you happen to know who may have these in stock?

I will be ordering, but not ready to stock the fish yet. I still have to get the lighting set, the plants done (I do not call it a scape... I don't scape. I just... well... stick plants in the dirt, and pray).

once that is done, I can speed cycle the tank... but I am still at least a few weeks away from getting the actual fish for this setup. if you are still interested when I order them, though, I will definitely let you know.

LOL. I was unsatisfied with my first design. When I "rescaped" it I made sure I put the tall ones in the back, short ones in the front (roots down :)), and plant them in groups, ie, hygros go here, bacopas go there, glosso goes everywhere in front. After a couple weeks of growth and slight adjustments, it's really coming together and doesn't look entirely accidental. It looks pleasant, if not composed. I have virtually no hardscape.

As for praying, um, the lord helps those who fertilize their plants.

LOL... well, I have a sort of short cut kind of mineralized substrate setup that, so far, has been working like a charm. once I added a little more light... WHOA. plant growth! and about two different types of algae! LOL...
