CO2 question for those that know

im just checking to see what an obvious sing that the yeast CO2 is consumed would be :?: for instance the ones i set up like three months ago had like 3.5 cups of sugar in a 3 litter bottle with about a half teaspoon of yeast...now the water was still pretty full after so long, but the sugar seems to be gone? and there were a few stringi things inside...all out? either way im redoing them today but i though i would ask :D thanks

Damian;

You should notice that the number of bubbles per minute decrease. CO2 production pretty much follows the bell curve as the yeast reproduces and generates more CO2 then declines as the sugar is used up. Without knowing what you're using for a reactor, you should be able to count the bubbles.

Damian, three months is definitely too long in-between changing out the water/sugar. In addition to using up the sugar, the creation of alcohol from fermentation, eventually slows down the yeast. When I did yeast CO2, I replaced by 2L bottles every week or two. I'd be surprised if you're getting any bubbles now.

ahaa, i see, Chris, i put the new ones in and i can SEE the difference, but there were bubbles though in the other one... :| anyhow, i put more sugar this time, since im doing two 3litter bottles with 4 cups of sugar and 1/4 tsp of yeast in them. we will see :D

has anyone heard of adding sugar every now and then? i thought i read it somewhere or something like that...can something like that be done?

No, not really.

The reaction forms alchohol, and the alchohol kills the yeast.

If you use the yeast that is sold for making wine it can tolerate a bit more alcohol, and will last a little longer.

i see, i'll check on that John and maybe i'll buy a little extra :D

since we are talking CO2, what do you guys use as a reactor or how do you diffuse the bubbles into the water?

i have two fluval 405's and what i did is a hole into the out-put of them and every bubble that came out gets hitten hard by the water flow which is pretty strong. now last night, as an experiment kind of thing, i put one of the hoses into the input of one fluval. now morning i see a lot less bublles than i used to see the other way around. i was hoping that the bubbles would get sucked in kicked butt and broken down by the impeller and filter media etc... :?: what do you think

Damian, injecting CO2 into the filter is a great way to diffuse pressurized CO2 into the water, but definitely be careful when using yeast, as you don't want the suction from the filter collapsing the yeast bottle, and sucking that alcohol into the tank. With yeast, I always used the ladder diffusers. Measure the results with a ph/kh test kit in the water column to determine which is more effective.

***ladder diffusers? im going to google that, but thanks for the advise and i'll see what i can do :D
