Do you quarantine new plants?

Post by chris_todd »

Quarantining new fish before putting them in an established aquarium is a standard recommendation, but I haven't seen anyone recommend quarantining new plants. Given that a number of fish diseases (particularly the external parasites that cause ich and velvet) can exist as cysts, isn't there some risk to adding a new plant to an established aquarium?

So do any of you quarantine your plants? If so, how would you do it? A standard fish quarantine tank is just a glass box with a filter and heater; what more would you need for a plant quarantine tank?

Forgive me if I sound paranoid, but I do computer security for a living, so I'm professionally paranoid. :-)

Personally I don't quarantine new plants. If you want to prevent snails and such from entering your setups you can soak new plants in a potassium permangenate solution for about an hour or so and then rinse them well. Jungle makes a product called Clear Water that works well for this application.

As far as plants go here are some things you can do.

I have some java ferns and anubias that have some BBA on them. I plan on trying bleach to treat for it.
