Greensand, also known as Glauconite, is a mineral mined from natural deposits of glauconite located in the Southern part of New Jersey. These deposits are of marine origin and are composed primarily of iron-potassium silicate, which gives it its bluish green color.

I was talking to a guy in the store on Sunday and he said that he uses Greensand under all of his gravel and has never had any issues with it.

I didnt get into specifics because I had no clue what it is but he said that he has been using it for years to grow swords and that it seems to work very well for him.

Anyone ever heard of this/used it?

I've never heard of it though it seems similar to zeolite sand.

The English are nuts on greensand in potting mixes for house/greenhouse plants, but I have never used it in pots or tanks myself.

Greensand has been used in the horticultural industry for ages. Never tried it in a tank. I'd be concerned the silicates would cause brown algae/diatom problems.

Cheers.

I might try to find some and see how it does.

Though I dont really want to mess with the recipe as it already works just fine.

Greensand is popular with organic gardeners. I had never thought of using it in the aquarium.

Any garden center or Lowes/Home Depot should carry it. Look in the fertilizer isle.

Cheers.
