I did the impossible?

Post by ingg »

So when I got into pressurized CO2, I was told -

Crank that sucker TIGHT. You can't break it, get manly with it!

Guess what.

I tightened it so tight last night I ripped the threads of my CO2 tank. And somehow blew one of the guages on the regulator, too, yay! Regulator wouldn't let flow past it for some reason, so I undud everything, retightened, and rip! no more threads.

This has been a crappy fish related stuff week, I tell ya.

Ordered a new regulator. The tank is a Robert's Oxygen tank - just take it and swap it out?

Dang! Dave looks a little diff.

BTW DON"T use that teflon/plastic
thead sealer - its useless. Metal on Metal, with that washer in between, and you
can get a 100% seal. I havent used that teflon junk in years now.

FYI - Teflon tape is NOT a sealer, it is a lubricant which allows you to run the threads in deeper for a better seal.

Finally! Can add something useful to the forum.

Most regulator instructions say DO NOT USE Teflon tape before the regulator because it can get into the regulator and mess it up.

Roberts will probably have a new nut to replace the one you stripped Dave you might not have to buy a new regulator. Give me a call if you need further assistance

Didn't strip the nut.

I stripped the end of the canister.

I don't use teflon tape.

Regulator is shot and I don't know why. The back pressure guage, the low one, is shot, and it won't let gas through (I have another canister to screw it onto, same thing.). Bought another one, should be here this week.

Dave,
I would just trade that tank back in. What are you doing with the old regulator? I would love to perform a autopsy on it if you don't want the regulator.

I remember trying to tighten my regulator using those old cardboard style washers and praying that it would not leak. No matter how tight it seemed to leak about 20% of the time and if I was lucky I would catch it before the bottle ran out.

I recently bought one of the Milwalkee regulators and they come with a special plastic washer and it works like a charm. You are also not suppose to have to replace them?

Not sure if this helps anyone but I love these plastic washers.

Yeah, don't try replacing the Milwaukee washer. I made that mistake and had to order them directly from Milwaukee because they are specially made for those regulators. To their credit they were super responsive and sent me two washers free of charge.
