I actually use some Fluvals in my setups as well... For me, I like eheim's tubing better (for easy addons like heaters, UV, reactors, etc) and never have any problems with eheims air-locking when injecting CO2 into the canister. That said, I think Fluvals are easier to prime, clean, and disconnect than the Eheims. None of them have broken down for me. I wish there was a hybrid between the two. I have:

Eheim 2213 and 2028 Pro (2-3 years)
Fluval 204, 304, 404 (3-4 years)

KrisW - the backflush is only for the bio-only canisters, agree it is worthless with other media loading. I admit it is better with the Dupla Minikaskade than with the Eheim Ehfimech. the latter requires more shaking and more throughput. But even I have a limited quantity of Minikaskade.

Washing any medium in tempered tap water puts you in good company - that is Paul Loiselle's favored technique. I admit that I used to do the same, but now little if any of my biomedia every travels to the sink anymore for cleaning. So long as you don't soak it is disinfectant-loaded water you should be fine.
