I just read the review for that camera (Canon Powershot S5 IS) and it recommends that you use rechargeable NiMH batteries for this camera. If you want to use regular AA's just buy the bulk 30-packs from Radio Shack, its what I use in my flashes.
Have you tried shooting with Shutter Priority? Try it and keep setting faster shutter speeds. Eventually the photos will be too dark, but somewhere in there should be some nice photos.
Okay, are these better?

I'll get there eventually I'm sure Michael - baby steps One of the big attractions to this camera for me was it has a preset aquarium mode!
Saw the pics neilanh took, and we'd been muling over a camera for a while anyhow. He loved his, and reviews were pretty positive on it.
We're too casual of camera users for me to fork over the cash for a DSLR, though they sure are nice! Pondered that for about 20 minutes, then found cameras like this Canon.

The best AA IMHO on the market are Rayovac Hybrid or Sanyo Eneloop batteries. They're NiMH, but use some other technology allowing them to sit on the shelf for up to a year, without losing much charge. I use them for all of my flashes, and they recharge fast, eliminating having to throw any batteries into a landfill.
"Grainy" photos are usually from high ISO speeds (these were all shot at ISO 800). Generally it is best if you can keep ISO to 200 or less.
I am working on a "Cheap Flash Photography" presentation. Just got some equipment in today and need to do some experiments to see what I can and can not do with it.

Yup, looks like to improve on this I have to go to manual mode... grrr. Making this complex
I'm taking this camera to Mike and making him set me up a custom tab, ut has a space for it, where everything is set to optimal for aquariums and all I have to do is focus - for slower ISO than the AUTO is letting me do.
It is the camera picking the ISO800, it isn't seeing enough light overall, so wants the setting, and takes it itself.... or, it could be my hand shaking, as it automatically goes to higher ISO's when doing image stabilization.
K, gonna do two things - find out where Aaron got a small tripod, AND ask Mike to set me up a custom tab, hehe.
